Serra Architekten has been recognized by Real Estate Business Review Magazine as the exclusive recipient of “Top 10 Urban Planning Services Providers in Europe – 2024,” based on our proprietary methodology, reflecting its position in the industry, and is also named among “,” reflecting its broader leadership. This profile has been developed by the Real Estate Business Review research and editorial team based on insights from an interview with Marco Serra, Architect.
Marco Serra, ArchitectAt Serra Architekten, a small team of architectural, urban planning and real estate experts tackles large-scale ideas through a unified practice. Each project, whether reshaping a new building or enhancing city corners, reflects a commitment of the architects to both aesthetic integrity and functional excellence—a process that spans from initial client consultations to the building’s ultimate use.
Understanding that the most impactful designs stem from collaboration, the studio engages closely with clients, guiding them through a reflective process to refine their aspirations. This approach positions the firm not as only a trustee of client interests but a design visionary.
“One of our primary challenges as architects is to understand our clients’ true needs. We believe that investing time to align their vision with our designs leads to creating spaces that are not only beautiful and functional but personalised,” explains Marco Serra.
While the company’s designs showcase diverse expressions, its work is defined by what is described as overarching expertise. In today’s data-dominated real estate landscape, which often yields generic, uninspired urban environments, Serra advocates for a human-centred approach. This strategy transcends mere statistics to craft spaces that inspire and resonate with individuals.
“Nature, and as part of it man, is our most valuable asset. The first attention in our creation is its well-being,” says Serra.
The most notable contributions to architecture are evident in two primary capabilities. The company excels at working within existing contexts. This increasingly important skill involves engaging sensitively with the pre-existing elements of a project— whether it’s the client's vision, the site’s characteristics, or its historical significance. In addition, it emphasizes the importance of openness toward project outcomes. Remaining open to how projects naturally evolve based on its unique contexts, uses and the people involved ensures responsive and dynamic results.
These practices are shaped by the powerful combination of expertise the company’s founders possess. Tiziana Ugoletti Serra’s PhD in urbanism and building preservation provides a deep understanding of urban context and historical preservation. This, coupled with Marco Serra’s extensive experience as both architect and client in large-scale corporate settings, gives the company a unique ability to translate client expectations into exceptional architectural solutions. This rare blend of perspectives empowers the studio to bridge the gap often found in the industry.
One Of Our Primary Challenges As Architects Is To Clarify Our Clients’ True Needs. We Believe That Investing Time To Align Their Vision With Our Designs Leads Directly To Creating Spaces That Are Not Only Beautiful And Functional But Deeply Personalised
Its ability to operate at micro and macro levels of architecture has led the studio to work on diverse projects, from renovating historical structures and designing modern commercial spaces to creating cosy family homes.
A standout example of its effective approach is the revitalization of a 1,000-year-old monastery in Spain. Faced with a project that was open towards the programme, user requirements, and the business plan, Serra did not impose a predefined solution. Instead, he spent three years working collaboratively with the client to develop a strategy tailored to the site’s historical significance and potential uses. This collaborative process highlights the unique approach.
The client did not enter the project with an independent business case but rather was open to developing the architecture and user needs in conjunction with the business plan, the local culture and the site. This flexibility ensured that the outcome was custom-made to what the project wanted to be, avoiding the frictions that often arise when these elements are developed separately. The resulting transformation into a thriving hotel destination showcased the company’s ability to integrate business strategy with architectural design and site-specific character, achieving a harmonious outcome often missed when these elements are considered in isolation.
It prioritizes tailored solutions, ensuring that each project isn’t merely a building, but a space that resonates with its users long after the design is complete. This dedication to a holistic, human-centered approach—from client collaboration to a belief in the architect's broader role—embodies Serra Architects’ concept of ‘overarching expertise.’
