Professional Background and Current Role Overview

My 35 years of working are more in the hospitality and real estate industries. I was a general manager of a resort in Bali when I was 28 years old, then managing director of a mall, then developing high-rise apartments and landed housing before coming back to the hotel business as director from the owning company side. 3 years as an entrepreneur in property and hospitality as President and CEO, then coming back to work again in a developer company as COO, my last job was as President Director and CEO of the largest convention and exhibition center in Indonesia at that time, and now I am developing the largest convention and exhibition center in Indonesia. My current role in Agung Sedayu Group is to develop the MICE industry through various products, as well as commercial aspects of convention and exhibition venues.

The property sector in Indonesia is still facing a challenge due to the young generation as first-time buyers having a new trend of renting instead of owning property, but at the same time having a trend of traveling and experiencing something new. This gives us an opportunity to create other products to cater to this biggest generation in the Indonesian market today to create something related to tourism and hospitality, including the MICE sector, so our focus today in our business as a group is to see potential and to develop this tourism and hospitality segment. This will help the real estate sector, especially housing and commercial land, as the backbone sales in our group keep growing with a combination of living, working and playing in the resort and festive city.

See the market, is there any room for development, improvement or stimulating the market to create new products on creative economics, hospitality and tourism products? Talking to all stakeholders is very important to learn what the market needs and what kind of product suits it. Sharp feasibility study have to develop to measures all risk, financial structure and also exit plan and regulatory, but in the end it is the customer experience that we need to focus extra carefully.

Pivotal Decision and Key Leadership Insights

I once had the opportunity to sell an old building, I see so much potential to grow the revenue on it, but a great number of investments to buy and to renovate it. So I create a business plan to invite investors to join, but no one will invest if we personally do not put any risk there. So I bet almost everything I had to secure the building and then selling the idea to a potential investor was easier to convince. We were lucky enough to sell back the building on the market fast enough after minor renovation and gain some profit on it. But this lucky act gives me something to learn, that not everyone has to be an entrepreneur and not everyone also has to be a professional, we were born to be one of them or sometimes both.

Personal Commitment To Sustainability In Property Development

Is it true that the world needs to change to be a better place, and it should start from small actions, but together as a human race, regardless of their position or industry, it could start from every home in our neighborhood? In my role, we have the opportunity to create a bigger sustainability program, from waste management and water management to sustainable energy and also the people development. My personal focus is on waste management and energy. In all the projects we build, we are using solar panels and turning garbage into a new energy source.

Global Real Estate Trends Influencing Strategic Thinking

One close example is Singapore in various developments, whether it is for landed houses to vertical development, the tourism sector, the business sector, public transport, schools, or hospitals, everything is connected effectively. So I think Singapore, as a country, with all its developments, influenced my method of thinking about how our project is connected to making people live easier, more effectively, and more efficiently.
